Stomphia coccinea -- Swimming Anemone
Swimming Anemone
Stomphia coccinea

In the colder northern waters from Alaska to Washington, the Swimming Anemone can be found in the shallow subtidal areas.  In southern California, it keeps to the deeper, colder waters.  This anemone will detach itself from its rock and swim away at the approach of its predators, such as the leather star.
